DECLINE IN MARRIAGES AND DIVORCES IN TAJIKISTAN

According to data from the civil registration authorities, 14,913 marriages were registered in the republic during January–March 2026, which is 18.5 percent lower compared to the same period in 2025. During the first three months of last year, this figure amounted to 18,288 couples.

The overall marriage rate during this period amounted to 5.6 marriages per 1,000 population. By region, the highest marriage rate was recorded in Sughd Region, with 6.2 marriages per 1,000 people. In Khatlon Region, the figure was 5.7, in the districts of republican subordination 5.4, and in the city of Dushanbe 4.7. The lowest rate was observed in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, at 2.6.

At the same time, analyses show that alongside the decline in the number of marriages, the divorce rate has also shown a downward trend. During January–March 2026, the number of registered divorces amounted to 1,893 couples, which is 8.6 percent lower compared to the same period in 2025. During the same period last year, 2,072 divorce cases were registered.

The overall divorce rate in the republic amounted to 0.7 divorces per 1,000 population. By region, the highest divorce rates were observed in Sughd Region, the districts of republican subordination, and the city of Dushanbe, with 0.9 divorces per 1,000 people. In the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, this figure was 0.6, while in Khatlon Region it was 0.4.

According to sociologists and demographic experts, the decline in divorce rates may be the result of a gradual increase in family awareness, the strengthening of national traditions, and greater responsibility among young people in family relationships. In recent years, the implementation of state programs aimed at improving citizens’ legal awareness, teaching family responsibility, and promoting healthy lifestyles has also played an important role in strengthening family relations.
