Decline in crime in the republic: results of the first quarter of 2026

As a result of measures implemented by law enforcement agencies and strengthened control in maintaining public order, the crime situation in the Republic of Tajikistan in the first quarter of 2026 shows a relatively stable downward trend.

In January–March 2026, a total of 6,336 crimes were recorded in the country. Of these, 5,573 cases (88.0 percent) were registered by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor’s Office, while 763 cases (12.0 percent) were recorded by other law enforcement agencies.

Overall indicators show a decrease in crime. During the reporting period, the total number of crimes decreased by 1.7 percent, including a decrease of 8.2 percent in Dushanbe and 11.4 percent in districts of republican subordination. At the same time, a slight increase was observed in Sughd region (0.3 percent) and Khatlon region (5.5 percent).

During this period, 1,415 serious crimes were recorded, which is 12.8 percent lower compared to the same period last year. Significant declines were observed in several categories, including murder and attempted murder (down 51.7 percent), intentional grievous bodily harm (down 32.3 percent), rape and attempted rape (down 18.2 percent), theft (down 3.9 percent), fraud (down 4.5 percent), and hooliganism (down 3.3 percent).

At the same time, increases were recorded in certain categories: robbery rose by 26.1 percent, drug-related crimes by 36.6 percent, and traffic violations by 1.5 percent.

In the area of economic crimes, 837 cases were registered, representing a 3.7 percent decrease compared to the same period last year. Of these, 355 crimes were solved by internal affairs bodies, and criminal proceedings were initiated in 343 cases.

Additionally, 117 traffic accidents with serious consequences were recorded in January–March 2026, which is 9.3 percent lower than in the same period last year.

The overall crime detection rate during the reporting period was 57.7 percent, improving from 56.7 percent in the same period last year.

In general, the analysis shows that due to the measures taken, the crime situation in the country is on a downward trend, while the detection rate is gradually improving.
