INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION VOLUME REACHED 13.8 BILLION SOMONI

Industry is one of the key sectors of the economy in any country and a primary producer of material goods. Its development contributes to the progress of other economic sectors and strengthens the country’s standing and position in the international arena. Considering the significance of the industrial sector in addressing socio-economic challenges and creating jobs, on December 26, 2018, the Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon, in his annual address to the Parliament, declared the accelerated industrialization of the country as the fourth national goal. Furthermore, by Presidential Decree No. 309 dated January 6, 2022, the years 2022–2026 were declared the “Years of Industrial Development.”

Compared to other sectors of the economy, including agriculture, industrial production is steadily developing and plays an important role in employment, exports, GDP growth, and overall economic development.

Thus, in the first quarter of this year, industrial enterprises together with private entrepreneurs produced goods worth 13 billion 846.6 million somoni, which is 23.4% more in comparable prices than in the same period of the previous year.

The main factors driving the growth of the industrial sector were: an increase in output in the mining industry by 1.8 times, in manufacturing by 2.1%, in electricity, gas, steam supply, and air purification by 10%, and in water supply, waste treatment, and recycling by 28.3%.

Tajikistan’s manufacturing industry, taking various factors into account, is a key economic indicator. New production chains are forming around it, making it a vital component of the economic and industrial structure.

In the reporting period (January–March 2025), the volume of production in the manufacturing industry amounted to 6 billion 490.0 million somoni, which is 2.1% more than in the same period last year (in comparable prices).

This included:

  • Food, beverages, and tobacco: 2 billion 373.6 million somoni
  • Textile and garment industry: 748.6 million somoni
  • Wood, paper products, and publishing: 156.4 million somoni
  • Petroleum products: 14.0 million somoni
  • Chemical industry: 99.6 million somoni
  • Non-metallic mineral products: 812.4 million somoni
  • Metallurgy and metal products: 1 billion 975.3 million somoni

The further development of the economy depends primarily on the efficient use of natural resources and the expansion of industrial production.

During this period, the mining industry produced goods worth 4 billion 620.3 million somoni, which is 1.8 times more than in the same period of the previous year (in comparable prices).

The growth in the mining sector was due to increased extraction of coal and boron by 30.0%, metal ores by 1.7 times, and other minerals by 1.5 times.

The volume of electricity, gas supply, and air purification services for January–September 2024 amounted to 2 billion 657.6 million somoni, showing a production increase of 110%.

The volume of water supply, waste treatment, and recycling in January–March 2025 was 78.8 million somoni.

The volume of industrial products sold, including inventories, amounted to 13.4 billion somoni during January–March 2025.

In the overall industrial output of the country, Sughd region leads with 60.8%, followed by Khatlon region with 19.8%.

  • On average, the per capita volume of industrial production in the country was 1,332.35 somoni.

During the reporting period, 3,780 industrial enterprises were operating, including:

  • Mining: 349 enterprises
  • Manufacturing: 3,257
  • Electricity, gas, steam supply, and air purification: 72
  • Water supply and waste treatment: 102

Among them:

  • In Sughd region – 1,242 enterprises (32.9%)
  • In Khatlon region – 866 (22.9%)
  • In Dushanbe – 822 (21.7%)
  • In the Districts of Republican Subordination – 708 (18.7%)
  • In Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region – 142 (3.8%)

According to the country’s socio-economic development forecast, industry remains one of the most promising sectors and is in a stage of sustainable growth.

Efficient use of human and natural resources as development factors of the national economy will ensure major transformations in the industrial sector and contribute to achieving the country’s strategic goals.

  • As noted by the Leader of the Nation, Emomali Rahmon, in his Address to Parliament on December 28, 2024:

“Within the framework of the strategic goal of accelerated industrialization, over the past five years, the volume of industrial production has increased from 27 to 53 billion somoni, nearly doubling. During this period, more than 2,040 industrial enterprises and 74,000 jobs have been created across the country. In 2024 alone, 740 new enterprises were established, creating about 20,000 jobs. The industry’s average annual growth rate was 15%, but considering the available potential, this is still not enough to achieve the accelerated industrialization goal. I remind you that the industry growth rate should be no less than 20% annually.”
