Conducting research on tobacco use in the Republic of Tajikistan
From June 1-2, 2016, the preparatory workshop for the conduction of the research on tobacco use in the Republic of Tajikistan is being held in the Agency on Statistics under the President of the Republic within the framework of the cooperation agreement between the Centre for statistical research, economic, social, and professional training for the Islamic Countries (SESRIS).
The main objective of this workshop is the integration of tobacco use questionnaire into a national survey of household budgets, improving the skills of the staff working in the field of household budget survey on how to conduct a survey on smoking, monitoring of the household budget survey to improve the quality of data, analysis of the results, obtaining of information about the harm of tobacco on human health and its consequences.
Tobacco use survey for the first time is conducted in the Republic of Tajikistan with the view to implement the international questionnaire on tobacco use in national studies to obtain comparable data at the international level through the survey of the adult population on the tobacco use to reduce the harmful effects of tobacco on the population.
Questions for the survey on tobacco use are the components of the Global Epidemiological Surveillance over the use of tobacco products, which was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention of USA and other partners. The questionnaire is adapted to the conditions of the republic and the additional questions such as the use of “nos” and knowledge of the population about the harm of tobacco on human health were added.
The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control stresses that the important component of the global efforts complex for tobacco control is an effective and systematic monitoring of the supervision over the tobacco.
To conduct this study, 50 employees of the Agency from all the 5 regions of the country will be trained for two days. According to the selection of households the survey of each household member above 15 years of age will be conducted in the 3000 households.
The results of this study will contribute to the development of health programs for taking effective and timely measures to combat tobacco use in the Republic of Tajikistan.
