A team of nutrition assessment experts led by Dr. Warren T K Lee, Senior Nutrition Officer of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Rome, visited the Dushanbe, GBAO and RRS of Regional”s Offices of the Agency of Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan (AoS) from 27 to 31 July 2015.
The visit was to provide a capacity development training course for AoS staff in the Sogd region to use a food-based assessment tool (Minimum Dietary Diversity Women, MDDW) in collecting nutrition information of women at reproductive age. The course was attended by 19 AoS staff enumerators from the Northern region of the country.
Three days of the course were devoted to lectures, group exercises, adapting the tool to the local context through focus group discussions with key informants from local jamoats and districts. The final two days were devoted to field trips with hands-on experience on conducting MDDW data collection.
“Given the high prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in women at reproductive age and childhood stunting, The government of Tajikistan needs a simple and validated food-based indicator to monitor diet quality of women, to set nutrition targets and to evaluate impacts of nutritional interventions,’’ said Dr. Lee. AoS aims to integrate a nutrition component into the annual Household Budget Survey by 2016.
Following the success of the seminar on diversity of food and the collection of experimental data in the Khatlon region in 2014, the Agency supported the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the further study of the data collection on the situation of food for the household budget survey conducted for other regions of the country.
In April 2015, this type of training workshop was held for the staff of the Household Budget Survey of the Main Department of the Agency on Statistics under the President of the Republic in the Sughd region. Experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) noted that "Tajikistan is the first country, which held a seminar on the use of food with the help of the latest methods for data collection at the country level, after developing it in 2014".
After the training seminar within the next ten days, the survey of household budgets, a survey will be conducted in Dushanbe, GBAO and RRS to collect data on the nutritional status of women, in accordance with the questionnaire adapted to local conditions.
Currently, within the framework of this project, all employees of Statistics Household Budget Survey of the country on Food Security and authorities trained to assess the diversity of food.
