Soaring international food prices in 2007-2008 resulted in higher domestic food prices in many developing countries, affecting consumption of low-income populations and causing food insecurity. A period of high volatility in food commodity markets followed, highlighting the value of timely and reliable market analysis to support appropriate policy decisions.
Against this background, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) intensified its food price monitoring and analysis activities, leading to the development of the online Food Price Monitoring and Analysis Tool. Building on the success and experience gained through developing the FAO Tool for price monitoring and analysis at global level, it has now been adapted for use at country level.
The FAO Tool, when implemented at country level and linked to existing data collection systems, can greatly facilitate dissemination of price information, and market analysis, for policy makers.
Through a Turkish-funded project, and with support from a European-Union-funded project for strengthening Tajikistan s National Food Security Information System, FAO has collaborated with the Agency on Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan to install the FAO Food Price Monitoring and Analysis Tool at country level.
Key specialists in the Agency on Statistics will benefit from training in the use of the tool on 19 Nov 2014 in Dushanbe. Experts from FAO headquarters in Rome will provide the training.
The Republic of Tajikistan Food Price Monitoring and Analysis Tool is expected to be a significant support to Agency on Statistics and others, improving the quantity and quality of market and food security information and analysis in the country, and enhancing the relevance and utility of data. The tool is intended as a contribution to evidence-based policy formulation and decision-making processes in Tajikistan.
