The Agency on Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan hosted the first workshop for journalists ever conducted in Dushanbe. Funded by USAID, the workshop trained journalists to use the results of the 2012 Tajikistan Demographic and Health Survey (TjDHS).
Almost 20 journalists from print, radio, and television attended the two-day workshop at the Statistical Agency to review the findings of the TjDHS and discuss strategies for making these important survey results more widely available to the public.
Two international experts—Ms. Michele Berdy, journalist and public health specialist with the Moscow Times and Ms. Laurie, Liskin, Communication specialist from the US-based Demographic and Health Survey Program - and local specialist, Mr. Abduvali Kulov, Head of the Department of Demography, Employment and Social Statistics of the Agency for Statistics, facilitated the workshop, strengthening journalists skills in interpreting and reporting on national population-based data and comparing Tajikistan s health status with other countries in the region and in Europe.
The journalists expressed gratitude to the Agency for Statistics for the opportunity to attend the workshop. “Let s have more workshops like this,” one of the participants asked. “ “For us these workshops are extremely interesting and helpful.”
